Card Management is subsequent to packaging and distribution, the customised (personalized) card ends up with the cardholder, and is thus ready for use. The card now becomes a component of an entirely different production process. During the rest of its life cycle the card will be used to identify its holder, as a value bearer or to provide access to a variety of services. But for it to function, practically always some form of card administration is required.

For obvious reasons, major card issuers, credit card issuing banks, etc. regard card administration as a strategic company asset to be completely managed inhouse. All administration and transaction processing is taken care of a “processing centre”. Here are routines for processing of

personal information, card numbering, lost and replaced cards, issue of PINs, administration of bonuses, payments and invoicing of various kinds of loyalty card is often done in this way today.

Many card issuers have chosen to locate the administration entirely outside their own organisation due to cost benefits and increased efficiency.
