Electronic gift cards
An electronic gift card or “gift voucher” is a further development of the classic gift voucher, which is usually issued on paper and often takes the shape of a lavish certificate. Unfortunately, these paper-based gift vouchers have proved easy to falsify, and they are costly to administrate. The use of plastic cards allows this problem to be circum vented; they can be quickly read at the cash desk in the same way as a credit card, the validity of cards is checked on the spot, purchases costing less than the total value of the gift card can be handled without having to issue a new card – and the whole transaction can be integrated with the under lying system. Moreover, it is possible to use "top-up” giftcards, which there by also act as loyalty cards.
