GSM

GSM originally stood for ”Groupe Spécial Mobile”, after the task force responsible for the development of the GSM system for mobile telephony. Nowadays, the system is more usually referred to as “Global System for Mobile Communications”. GSM is a digital mobiletelephone technology which was introduced in the autumn of 1993, the use of which has subsequently expanded rapidly throughout the world. One of the most important aspects of GSM architecture is the fact that right from the start it was decided to separate the telephone and subscription. The subscriber’s identity and password are already stored on a small plasticcard (the SIM card), which can be replaced or moved to another phone as required. This mobility has facilitated technological development and stimulated market growth in the whole telecommunications industry.
