Smart cards The term smart card refers to cards with integrated electronic chips. In their simplest forms, these chips consist of a computer memory, but they often also contain a tiny processor with the help of which simple calculations can be made. How smart cards are to be designed is mainly described in international standard ISO 7816. Smart cards started to appear on the market during the 1980s and are widely used today, for example as credit cards, subscription cards in mobile telephony (SIM), telephone cards and entry passes. In the longer term, this technology may replace the traditional magnetic card by virtue of the increased degree of security they provided, etc.
